At Cosy Club, we’re real fans of the cosy lifestyle. It’s in the name, after all! So we were very interested to see a new word start popping up on our timeline: Hygge!
Well, not so new...the word hygge has been around since at least the 18th century, and according to the site Hygge House is “ a Danish word used to acknowledge a special feeling or moment...ordinary or extraordinary but is always cosy, charming or special”. Hygge House emphasises that, as opposed to a particular lifestyle or furniture set, hygge is not something you can buy but something you should feel.
If you’re feeling trapped, bored or otherwise tired of your home...same. The last couple of years have been the perfect conditions to make you utterly sick of your home, and you’re probably in desperate need of a lifestyle change. Luckily for you, hygge is an easy lifestyle to embody with a little bit of mindfulness and self-reflection.
Firstly, think about what makes you happy, calm and cosy. Above all else, you need to feel comfortable, even if that means going against the grain of traditional design choices. Though of course, some design know-how does help.
Keep bright, cool, overhead lights to a minimum. While them might be great for an office environment, their harsh tones are going to sanitize your cosy space. Replace with warm lights, lamps or candles for a softer, more welcoming zone.
As with many Scandinavian styles, minimalism and natural finishes are considered desirable. If you don’t care for those styles, that’s fine! But you still may want to tidy up, as the chaos of clutter is an easy stressor for homeowners and guests alike. You don’t need to be too critical of your belongings though – keep anything that has strong sentimental value, is aesthetically pleasing to you, or makes a good talking point. You want to evoke feelings of happiness, comfort and nostalgia.
Embrace pillows and blankets! If you don’t have enough to build that pillow fort you always wanted, then it’s time for an emergency shopping spree! Not sure how to store them? Use underbed boxes, storage ottomans, or vacuum packs to seal anything away that you aren’t currently using.
Finally, the best way to embrace Hygge is to make memories in your home! Invite friends over for a cup of tea and share stories around the fire. Cook yourself a lovely, slow cooked meal and snuggle into bed with a good book. Make a habit of drinking tea out of your favourite cup in the morning, maybe as you watch the sunrise. Be present, be mindful, and give yourself permission to have cosy moments. Before you know it, you’ll form your own comfortable habits and be living the Hygge life.
